The Glossary
Even without tasting Xi Shan, China's most famous alcoholic drink, it's easy for many tourists to get intoxicated with the culture and natural splendor of Guizhou, one of China's poorest provinces yet among the richest in ethnic significance. Its karst cave networks, thick jungles, terraced hills, and cascading waterfalls like China's biggest water curtain, Huangguoshu, also contribute towards making Guizhou a runaway winner among adventurers.
Around 40 Chinese destinations, and Thailand's Bangkok, are connected to the airport and railway of Guizhou's capital, Guiyang, which is a marvelous destination in itself for its dinosaur fossils, Tianhetan cave and waterfall, Qing Dynasty's Hong Fu Si Temple, Maotai liquor, and many traditional arts and crafts like the Buyi people's Anshun batik, the Gejia's animal-shaped silver ornaments, and yuping flute, which sounds like a bird's serenade.
Guizhou's roads are in good condition for riding taxis towards China's biggest cavern, Zhijin Cave in Zhijin, and largest falls, Huangguoshu Waterfalls in Anshun, home to large caves and a Confucian tea house. Caohai Lake is another environmental gem as it is the home of the last black cranes in the world.
More than 35 percent of the province's population are the minorities such as the Miao and the Dong, who live in Kaili, an industrial coal city of rundown buildings next to the covered Wind and Rain Bridges of the Dong people, and the Miao's traditional homes perched on dangerous mountain angles. The Dong is famous for their pipe playing, bullfighting, horse racing, comedies, and August 5th rain-worship festival, wherein they sing and dance under their Drum towers. The Miao, meanwhile, is famed for their animal-shaped silver ornaments, colorful animal and geometric embroidery, and two-foot wooden horns the women wear as part of their daily clothing.
Zunyi, a city that dates back to the Song and Yuan Dynasties, is a well-visited communism pilgrimage site for it is where Mao Zedong became a full-fledged don of the Communist Party. To The South of the city is Hailongtun Fortress, remains of a Middle-Age castle atop a mountain.
During the Ming Dynasty, a building spree in Guizhou had made many residents from Sichuan and Hunan set up shop in Guizhou, bringing in their homegrown cuisine that boasts of spicy dishes like Silk Babies (rice pancakes), suan tang yu (fish hot pot), and mi jiu (sweet purple rice wine) as delicacies.
