The Glossary
Tucked in between picturesque limestone mountains and land formations is the scenic town of Guilin, one of China's most-prominent tourist havens for its rivers, lakes, caves, and karst mountains that are not only far-off from the rest of Chinese topography, but are also inspirational backdrops for learning Chinese languages and culture. A city in the Guangxi region, Guilin is perfectly equipped to receive tourists with its over 200 backpacker accommodation facilities, 100 mid-range inns, and 30 five-star hotels, that are dispersed among the city's many lures such as Ocean Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in Asia.
A popular activity among travelers is a cruise on Li River, one of the city's most popular landmarks immortalized at the back of Y20 bank notes. The boat ride passes through the lovely little town of Yanshou, the natural arch of Elephant Trunk Hill, which resembles an elephant's trunk, and Fubo Hill, a shear-sided rock that has Buddhist inscriptions and historical stone carvings. At daytime, a boat tour around the city's two rivers and four lakes will give one a chance to see traditional cormorant fishing.
For those after adventure sports, Wu Pai River might be interesting for white-water rafting. Hikers might just love the limestone Reed Flute Cave, with its lion, monkey, and skyline-shaped stalagmites, and Butterfly Caves, with its butterfly-shaped stalactite, waterfalls, and butterfly-filled mountain trails that overlook beautiful gardens. Yaoshan Hill Park offers more trekking, with its summit that gives a beautiful aerial view of Guilin.
Guilin's "Forbidden City" is Jing Jiang Princes City Park, once home to the city's princess, now a park and a museum. Set in a beguiling landscape, Guilin Shangri-la Park introduces visitors to the city's 13 ethnic minorities with regular staged performances of traditional songs and dances. Nearby is a village that has workshops displaying local crafts like buffalo horns, weavings, embroideries, calligraphies and carvings. The people's ingenuity can also be gleaned at Longshen's Longji Terraced Field, a ladder-like rice field that rises up to 880 meters, first built during the Yuan Dynasty.
In between sights, travelers may want to unwind in the golf course and theme park of Guilin Merryland, or try local delicacies like mi fen (rice noodles), chao fen (stir-fried noodles), and ma ti gao (horse hoof cake) along with liquan (beer) and osmanthus tea.
Hong Kong, Macau, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Bangkok and Osaka have daily flights to Guilin's Liangjiang International Airport. There are also trains from Beijing, Hong Kong, Kunming, and Chengdu via Guilin.
