Chendu is located in western Sichuan province of China on the banks of the Funan River, which flows across the city. Chengdu is often referred to as 'Land of Milk and Honey' on account of its fertile agricultural plains. The city has a long and illustrious history - the location of the city was the seat of 9th Kaiming king in 4th Century BC. However, historians credit the foundation of the city to Zhang Yi in 316 BC. It is connected to the outside world through Shuangliu International Airport. It can also be reached from other parts of China by rail. Chengdu has easy communication to many other famous attractions of China like the Three Gorges (Yangtze River), Giant Buddha (Leshan) and Mount Emei.
As can be guessed from its ancient standing, Chengdu has numerous heritage sites. Jin Sha excavation site gives a peek into human civilization 3000 years ago. A massive amount of items such as art pieces, building foundations, gold ornaments, pottery and blades have been discovered in a recent excavation at the site. Wenshu Temple is an impressive Buddhist Temple dating back to Tang Dynasty. It is still an active temple, which contains hundreds of Buddha statue. Qingyang Temple is one of the oldest temples of the area. This active Taoist heritage is linked to many legends popular in the area.
A night at Sichuan Opera is sure to full of entertainment that one will remember throughout one's life. The traditional Chinese shows at the opera features fire spitting dance performance, shadow plays, magic shows and traditional music. For wildlife enthusiasts, a visit to Panda Research Base is a must. The Base provides shelter to 60 giant Pandas and it is possible to have a look at the members of this endangered species from close range. Located nearby is Chengdu Zoo, which is home to many typical zoo animals.
Soothing massage and foot washing is a specialty of Chengdu and it will be a mistake not to indulge in this pleasure. There are several massage centers offering this service. It is a relaxing experience of unique type getting this massage. Other popular attractions of Chengdu are the Baoguang Temple, Wangjianglou Park and the Institute of Wisdom.
