Fuerteventura Travel Guide
Today, Fuerteventura is a sun, sea, and sand paradise for both beach and extreme sports enthusiasts alike. This island owes its volcanic panorama and black-sand beaches from a massive volcanic eruption that happened 20 million years ago, making it the oldest of the Canaries' atolls. It was first mentioned in Homer's famous epic, Odyssey, in 850 BC, before it became home to the Phoenicians of 11th century BC, to the French of 1405 AD, and to today's Spaniards and Africans.
This island off the coast of Africa may be only second to Tenerife in terms of size, but its beaches are the longest in the whole archipelago. Staying true to Fuerteventura's rough translation as "strong winds" is the island's mighty breeze and water current, which makes the island a thriving community of surfers, windsurfers, kite surfers, scuba divers, sailors, and parasailing aficionados.
Fuerteventura might be among the Canaries' biggest islands, yet it is the least populated. This low population density makes seclusion-seekers gravitate towards the underdeveloped but pristine half of the region. The other side of the island, however, has been revved up with cheap dining and lodging choices to meet the needs and wants of backpackers.
The largest of Fuerteventura's holiday resort-towns is Corralejo, a traditional fishing village ringed by giant volcanic rocks and clear, deep blue waters. The town has beaches, sand dunes, small bays, nature reserves, modern amenities, and a waterfront promenade peppered with modern cafés and restaurants.
The most popular beach town in Corralejo is El Cotillo, the former capital of the then powerful chiefs of Maxorata. El Cotillo is favored by nude sunbathers for its tranquility, while its waters have become the playground of divers, sailors, surfers, sport sea fishers, and windsurfers.
Another of Fuerteventura's activity-filled islands is the islet of Antigua, which gained a recall as one of the places mentioned in the lyrics of the Beach Boys' 1988 song, "Kokomo." This city is the Canaries' answer to Jamaica, Barbados, and St. Barts as the queen island of the Caribbean when it comes to beach parties, white-sand beaches, dive spots, and carnival-like fiestas.
