Sre Ambel's façade may seem modest but its locals' respect for the wildlife is intense. Since the ‘80s, villagers of this tiny town have been harmoniously living with the environment, using traditional farming and fishing methods in the Kaong River where the "royal turtle" or Batagur baska lives. While wildlife conservation in Cambodia is still in its infancy, Sre Ambel is a pilot test for organized environmental efforts, with emphasis on the creatures living on rivers and wetlands. Environmentalists frequently come to this place and are aided by the Wildlife Conservation Society. It won't be long before Sre Ambel would venture to eco-tourism to promote education and awareness to people.
