A visit to the premier beach town of Sihanoukville is a breather from all the hikes and trails of temple trips. Here, visitors can lounge in a hammock or wander around the plentiful beaches and islands of this long forgotten deep-sea military port under the regime of General Lon Nol in the 1970's. The pristine beaches and warm hospitality of the locals combine with its laid-back atmosphere to offer a great tropical getaway from the morbid stories of the "Killing Fields" and glaring neon lights and pungent market scent of Phnom Penh.
Sihanoukville exudes a feel and look different from that of most Cambodian towns. The town is much newer and more urbane than most provincial cities. This can be attributed to the thriving tourism of this port town, servicing beach-going locals and foreigners.
Most of the beaches one can visit here are the popular Occheuteal Beach, the Sokha, Serendipity and the Victory Beach known as the backpacker beach found at the extreme north of Sihanoukville. Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular pastimes alongside enjoying the lovely sunsets and feasting on the fresh seafood along the beach.
Despite the escalating statistics of its foreign visitors, the pace is very calm and relaxed. Tourists can spot farm animals such as cows wandering around. The locals greet the foreign visitors with shy smiles which beckon them to come and enjoy the simple joys offered by this humble town.
