Mondulkiri Travel Guide
Mondulkiri offers mesmerizing landscape of lush pines, emerald forest, and wild beasts such as tigers and timid elephants. If Angkor Wat arouses a visual pleasure to the outside observer, the cascading waterfall of Mondulkiri will surely rouse the traveler's instinct to dip and dive into its unfathomable depths. However, diving into the very culture of Mondulkiri is even more fulfilling for the place is a good venue to have a firsthand experience of the Pnong life. Pnong is a large tribal group who calls the jungles of Mondulkiri as home. Having their own unique set of norms and customs, tribal members are known for their techniques of taming wild elephants and for their native dialect, which is distinct from the mother tongue.
The expanse of grasslands and deciduous forest of this province supports the Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area for protecting a large mass of wildlife, from gibbons' honeybees to a staggering number of bird species. Mondulkiri is the largest province of Cambodia and known to be its last frontier. Getting to Mondulkiri, however, entails an arduous trip on poor roads and cracked pavements. But the scenery of the place will hopefully make up for the potholes along the way.
In addition to the promising vista, the capital of Mondulkiri has a decent town called Sen Monorom which can be a great detour after a long day of trekking for elephants and swimming in its numerous waterfalls. The town has a guesthouse and a bar which can serve tourists a hearty meal and drinks. Hours can be spent waiting for the setting sun over the Srepok River or just communing with nature in this laid-back town.
