Speckled with fine, white slivers of beach and a smattering of small unexplored islets, Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) is one of the recent additions to the famous sites in Cambodia. Tourists may fancy strolling along the calm beaches observing the sight of beachcombing monks in their orange robes, walking along with them in virtual abandon. The unspoiled beaches inspire adults to be like rowdy children in a playground.
Koh Tonsay is Cambodia's secret garden, an idyllic haven, and a pastoral town with a backdrop of hills covered with tropical forest that overlooks the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Known as "Riviera of Asia" the beaches in Koh Tonsay have been a favorite coastal holiday destinations for the locals and for the few occasional tourists who happen to stumble on the place.
The sea around the island, hemmed just off Kep on Cambodia's South Coast, is as still as glass and perfectly reflects the sky on a clear day. At night, the gleaming marine creatures flash and crackle in its clear water. The highlight is when one begins to wade and every movement produces its own glowing trail. It's like being surrounded by a swarm of underwater fireflies with blue green sparks, flickering and fizzing around.
Instead of the usual holiday in an overpriced hotel or in immaculate apartment blocks, bamboo huts teetering on stilts beckon the tourists as locals offer their warm smile and genuine hospitality.
