Kep may not readily ring a bell but the sprawling beaches that lie on its long coast have been the tourist mecca to some notable kings in history such as King Sihanouk and the playground of the Cambodian elites who have built villas along the coastal promenade. Old-fashioned and decrepit, the vista is famous through the tattered postcards from Cambodia's colonial days. The tumultuous years of the Khmer Rouge did leave ruins too horrible to list but now Kep is a beautiful hamlet by the sea which exudes a warm atmosphere.
Dotted with mangroves and black rock as opposed to the white sand of its rival Sihanoukville, the inimitable richness of the beaches in Kep is likely to attract any nature lover. The place is strangely pregnant with stories as to where Kep got its name. For centuries Khmer and French crowd journeyed to its balmy shores to watch the tranquil sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand. Nowadays, though some of its crumbling villas have been abandoned, the splendor of the beachside market has been a peculiar attraction, making it a favorite venue of the beachcombing populace of Cambodia who love to get a tan and a taste of the best crabs in Cambodia.
Travelers can indulge in various water sports or take a tour to the nearby Rabbit Island or Koh Tonsay or simply spend quality time on the beach with their loved ones. Today, Kep appears to be experiencing a total renaissance, slowly rising from the ashes with several mid-range luxury guesthouses and hotels sprouting like mushroom near its shoreline.
