The Glossary
The image of a dangerous province and a heavily-mined stronghold of the Khmer Rouge will vanish into thin air once its shady French designed streets and colonial buildings emerge in a traveler's line of vision. Cambodia's second largest city, Battambang is named after the colorful statue along Highway 5 that leads to Phnom Pehn.
Though Battambang may not have the history and tourist attraction that Phnom Penh has, it delights its visitors with a parade of eye-catching, regal structures which are a fusion of French and Khmer architecture.
The washed out and peeling yellow paint of the streets stretching out from Psar Nat still provide the city with a distinctive character, prompting Daryll Collins to describe it as a city that has maintained its original allure, a place where the remnants of the Thai period are juxtaposed with a decidedly French colonial town.
Statues of historical figures and fine stone carvings are seen in the dilapidated temple of Wat Ek Phom, considered as the most famous shrine in Battambang. As with most cities in Asia, the markets are nestled in the heart of the town, producing a flurry of activities. Just taking some time to wander around some of these places is a great way to see the life in Battambang up close. Food stalls abound in the area with some of them tempt with authentic Khmer cuisine.
In spite of some cosmetic changes and the perennial problem in traffic, Battambang still hangs on to its tranquil charm which is typical of a regional hub.
