At first glance, the town of Anlong Veng in the Oddar Meachey province seems to be an impoverished, dusty village in need of some economic boost and major face-lift. A closer examination of the history of Cambodia will disclose that this remote town was once the stronghold of the Khmer Rouge.
There is not much to see in this town other than the graves of Ta Mok and Pol Pot-two of the chief architects of Cambodia's reign of terror. There is also the Ta Mok's mountain house where graffiti artists carve their "work of art" in little shells. Visitors will also be rewarded with a glimpse of the fabulous view of Cambodia from atop.
Today, after years of war and isolation, the town which served as a mute witness to the murder of at least one million citizens, is now seeking to attain a certain level of normalcy and tranquility. Travelers are also starting to come to this country renowned for its scenic beauty.
