Southern Burkina Faso Travel Guide
Southern Burkina Faso may be the end of the road in the country, but for travelers looking for offbeat safaris, lush countryside, and buzzing nightlife and market life, Southern Burkina Faso may be the start of a new frontier.
A market town, Gaoua is popular in Southern Burkina Faso for its Lobi people's superstitious beliefs and customs that revolve around the town's attractions such as caves, a mosque, a sacred tree forest, and a museum featuring local art. The town's boîtes or informal nightclubs, as well as its Sunday souks, give the town a bustling feel.
An eclectic market called the Grand Marché is also the highlight in Bobo-dioulasso, the country's second-largest city. Bobo-dioulasso's Grande Mosquée is a good example of Sahel-style (Sudanese) mud architecture.
The springboard to the freely-roaming elephants of Parc Nacional Deux Balés is Boromo, a sleepy town. Hippopotamuses also roam freely in Sindou, where the villagers' circular mud houses are surrounded by an otherworldly landscape.
For a hike on a lush countryside, the launching point is old Banfora, while the gateway to Ghana is Tiébélé, a village with brightly-painted houses that dabble as fortresses.
