A haven for nature-lovers, the Tutong district of Brunei attracts tourists with its wonderful preservation parks and beaches. Spanning an area of more than 1,166 square kilometers, this lush forested region is home to various indigenous tribes such as the Tutong, Murut, and Kedayan.
Probably the highlight of any visit to Tutong is the Tasek Merimbun Lake. Uniquely shaped in the form of the letter "S," its inherent beauty earned it the distinction of being a part of an ASEAN Heritage Park. Considered as the largest lake in Brunei, it boasts of a secluded island lying right in its heart, including a host of various flora and fauna. In fact, it inspired the creation of a scientific research center dedicated mainly to studying the site's rich natural resources.
Tourists can't go wrong heading to the popular Seri Kenangan Beach, either. A favorite spot for the family get-togethers and picnics, it boasts of pristine coastline and the scenic strip of land separating the Tutong River from the South China Sea. One can also find near the beach the royal residence "Istana Pantai," including a host of playgrounds, food kiosks, picnic tables, and grass areas.
Another attraction worthy of a visit is the Tamu Tutong Kampong Serambungan. Avid shoppers will not be disappointed in this sprawling tamu, or open market, that hawks a trove of goods like vegetables, fruits, handicrafts, and most especially local fare. One can also unwind at the Sungai Basong Recreation Park, the place to be for many a picnicker visiting in Tutong. Found just a few minutes' drive from the district center, it offers a small lake surrounded by activity areas, shelter huts, and platforms.
