The Temburong district in the Bruneian territory is completely cut off from the mainland, uniquely separated by the Brunei Bay and a sliver of land belonging to Sarawak, Indonesia. Temburong may be a name one would hardly ever hear in conversations about tourist destinations in the country. It is even overlooked by travelers who head straight from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan to the other more known attractions. However, it boasts of some of northern Borneo's most intact rainforests and, therefore, is a place that merits attention.
A trip to Temburong almost always begins with a visit to the Ulu Temburong National Park, reputed to display the best example of natural beauty in the region. Only reached via a boat ride, one usually would have to hire a water taxi from Bandar Seri Begawan - passing through rapids, submerged logs, and shallow waters on a journey that is as exciting as the itinerary itself. The park sprawls over a vast area of around 50,000 hectares, bordered by the Temburong and Belalong Rivers. Of course, one would have to bring along some appropriate gear, food, lots of patience, and above all a keen sense of adventure.
Probably the most fascinating sight to see is the rare Proboscis Monkey, which has a distinctively long nose from whence it got its name. There is also the Wagler's Pit Viper that is often called the "Temple Viper," because it is said to bring good luck to Buddhist temples. Butterfly-lovers will be enthralled by the Rajah Brooke's birdwing, aptly called the "Jewel of the Rainforest" for their vibrant colors and designs. And of course, the "king" of the Temburong jungle is the Bornean Gibbon, a tail-less monkey that always pierces the morning calm with its loud calls. One must remember, though, that would-be visitors have to register their visit in advance as there is a waiting list, and that it is advisable to travel in a group.
Apart from the Ulu Temburong National Park, there are also other worthwhile destinations like the Batu Apoi Forest Reserve that offers exciting jungle trekking tours and adventure activities. There is also the Bukit Patoi Recreational Park nestled between the Bukit Patoi and Bukit Peradayan Hills. Spanning an area of four square miles, it features an abundance of unique rock and cave formations.
