Dubbed as the "Venice of the East" by the famed historian Antonio Pigafetta, Kampung Ayer is a district within Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan that constitutes the very essence of the nation. Formed by six small villages built on wooden stilts above the Brunei River, it still serves as one of the most significant trading hubs in the country.
The villages are interconnected via footbridges that would reach a length of around 29,000 meters if laid end to end. Said to be the cultural treasure of Brunei, it represents the country's humble origins as a fishing community before the discovery of vast oil reserves turned fortunes around.
A true highlight of a visit to Kampung Ayer is mingling with the traditional locals who continue to embrace their time-honored way of living. In fact, they all had chosen to stay in their humble homes even though the Brunei government continuously offers them a life in the neon lights of the city.
A walk around the slum-looking district will yield a surprising trove of things to please the eyes: ornate interior decorations, mosques, schools, long wooden speedboats, and most striking of all, the modern amenities that adorn the many rickety houses - satellite dishes, air conditioners, among others. Truly, a visit to Kampung Ayer promises to be an exciting and endearing one, and it is surely unlike anything else around.
