Non ducor, duco (I am not led, I lead), goes the Latin motto of Sao Paulo. Facts point Sao Paulo is up to its motto. It is the largest city of Latin America, located in the south eastern part of Brazil. Compared to Rio De Janeiro, another major city of Brazil, it is more cosmopolitan in character. The city was founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1554. It was a major economic hub of the region in 20th Century, attracting immigrants from different parts of the world. Today, Sao Paulo's charm is its multi-ethnic society and a colorful culture. The city has Japanese, Lebanese Christian, Arab and Italian neighborhoods living in perfect harmony with each other.
Numerous museums of Sao Paulo give a unique opportunity to its visitors to understand its rich cultural heritage. Sao Paulo Museum of Art has an excellent collection of Brazilian and European art over the ages. The Museo de Arte Sacra, perhaps the best of its kind in Latin America, showcases art and artifacts of the continent. Weekend fairs of the city also gives a good peek into its social life. Fairs at Praca da Republica and Embu are great places to go and pick up stylish wood carving, precious stones, paintings and other traditional products. Of course, one also has the choice to shop in city's glitzy malls. Sao Paulo has a lot of them.
The Parque do Ibirapuera, a public park with monuments, lake, vast expanses of greenery and even a planetarium, is popular among tourists. So is Butanta Institute, a research center for poisonous snake. Soccer is an art form in Brazil and it will be interesting to catch some soccer action in one of the stadiums of Sao Paulo - Parque Antartica, Pacaembu or Morumbi.
Sao Paulo's cuisine has as much variety as its people. While it is possible to get any type of food in view of its plural ethnic character, it may be most relishing to gorge on Tutu a Mineira, rice, cabbage and roasted pork loin, Pao de Queijo, cheese bread, or Acaraje, shrimp pie. One can enjoy Sao Paulo nightlife in Rua 13 de Maio and Jardins.
