It's easy to make the mistake of mistaking Rio de Janeiro as the capital of Brazil. Actually, it once held that position until the city of Brasilia was established in 1960 and became the country's administrative center. However, it has remained as somewhat the nation's soul - the city where samba, bossa nova, and capoeira had been born.
The more than five million tourists who head to Brazil every year invariably find themselves visiting this colorful city - greeted by the affectionate cariocas (demonym for the Rio residents) and the world-famous Rio culture and parties. Perhaps the only blight on the city is the presence of its notorious favelas (shanty towns), which serve as reminders of the poverty still ailing it.
Marvelous city
Rio de Janeiro has often been called “Cidade Maravilhosa,” Portuguese for “Marvelous City.” It is praise well-deserved, as Rio is probably one of the most beautiful metropolises in the world. It is located in a prime real estate of spectacular mountains like Sugarloaf, lush forests such as the Tijuca, and idyllic beaches at Ipanema and Copacabana.
Tourists of all kinds and interests can find something interesting to do in Rio, whether it may be for adventure, hedonism, or just plain sightseeing. Of course, attending the famed Carnival - a festival of music, dance, and parties - is high on the list of any visitor to the city. Shopping trips is also warranted, especially at Rio's high-end districts like Leblon and Sao Conrado.
The Olympic torch burns bright in Rio
In October of 2009, the International Olympic Committee voted Rio de Janeiro as the venue of the prestigious 2016 Olympics. It beat out such cities as Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo, and will be the first city from South America ever to host the event. An overwhelming factor in its selection is its natural beauty, but so are its landmarks and historic attractions.
Topping the list is the iconic “Christ the Redeemer” statue perched atop the Corcovado Mountain that overlooks Rio. The largest art deco statue in the world, it has come to be viewed as a symbol of Brazil. Not to mention the Maracana Stadium, the largest in South America with a seating capacity of more than 88,000 - and the centerpiece of the city's Olympic bid.
