The largest state in Brazil in area, Amazonas is located in the northern part of Brazil. In fact, Amazonas is larger than most countries in the world! The name Amazonas has an interesting story, derived from the river Amazon and also a tribe of warrior women, which had inhabited the forests surrounding the River Amazon.
The rich biodiversity of the place makes it a favorite among, tourists and botanists. The Amazon contains over half of the world's tropical rainforests, with over one-third of the world species living here. The Amazonas boast of the largest biodiversity of the planet!
The capital Manaus is located on the banks of the Rio Negro (Black River), the name accorded because of the dark color of the water! Manaus is located right in the middle of the Amazon basin, thus making it an important tourist centre, especially promoting ecological tourism. You will enjoy the ferry-ride in the Amazon River, while being ferried across to Manaus.
Tourists who come here to relax, enjoy fishing in the Anavilhanas Islands. The island is famous for Tucunare (Peacock Bass), Black Piranha and catfish. The local guides who are multi-lingual will guide you the best place to catch fish. January to July is monsoon, when the Amazon swells and the island is flooded. The best place for fishing however is Solimos, Lake Janauari and Lake Managuiri. Your trip to Anavilhanas will include a walk through the enchanting rainforests, canoeing side-trips and visiting local families, who will be glad to share pieces of information with you.
A notable landmark is the famous opera house is Teatro Amazonas, which was built in 1896. It took 15 full years to complete the interiors of the place, which look resplendent with crystal chandeliers, Italian frescos, wrought-iron banisters and of course a museum.
The Municipal Park of Mindu is also located in Manaus. It is mainly used for educational, scientific, cultural and tourist activities. The Park houses a library and the amphitheatre with a capacity for 600 people. The garden is worth visiting in which are planted several herbs and medicinal plants, aromatic herbs and an orchid nursery.
The Primeval Forest should be included in your itinerary, as this forest contains exotic trees and you will actually get to see how native Indians live symbiotically with the ecosystem. You will spot the rarest species of animals, reptiles, birds and trees. There are tourist camps on the banks of the rivers, lakes and natural reserves. Laze around in hammocks; have a glimpse of the region from a Jungle lodge. You will awaken to the call of wild animals. Ensure you're loaded with films!
The Floating Quay or The Cais Flutuante, is a port and loading area spanning around 1400 yards. It was built by British engineers. It's a sensitive area with sophisticated alarms and cameras.
The Paritins village is close to Manaus is famous for its annual festival Boi Bumba held in June. The lively folk-dances and music, presenting myths and legends, of roguish villains and brave heroes giant puppets and parade carts and tribal rituals enthrall the tourists.
Manaus's oldest market place is The Mercado Adolpho Lisboa, trading fruits, vegetables and fish, is compared to the Les Halles market of Paris.
