The portal to one of the best wildlife safari adventures of the Okavango Delta is the village of Maun. For some safari lovers, the mere mention of the village's name bring to mind images of khaki-clad guides, hunters, and four-wheel-drive trucks grinding their way to the bushes while the local Batawana men can be seen speaking a peculiar Setswana language as they bring cattle and goat to the market. Gazelles and antelopes also grace the river banks of Thamalakanae, while donkeys walk carelessly on the main road.
Formerly a frenzied jump-off point of hunters, Maun today is a frontier village boasting of a handful of lodges and hotels as well as four-wheel-drive vehicles for hire. Despite of its cosmopolitan atmosphere, Maun retains a rustic appeal befitting its role as the center of the Delta's safari industry.
A stroll around the small village will reveal an eclectic mix of shabby huts and modern structures housing several safari charter operations that run trips to several parklands and game reserves such as Moremi Game Reserve and Bush Camp Safaris, which for many travelers are the best ways to see the greater picture of the country and the big "game" it has to offer.
Other diversionary activities in Maun include riding a mokoro (dugout canoe) at the Crocodile Farm or a stroll around the Nhabe Museum, where visitors can find heaps of historical relics from the British settlers.
Heading out of the village, visitors may explore other destinations such as the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the Tsodillo Hills, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, and the Mokolodi Nature Reserve, among many others.
