The Glossary
Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Park has a plethora of attractions to spellbind the visitors starting from its sprawling iridescent salt pans, one of the most diverse land formations in the country, to the large number of African zebras that dot its surreal landscape, thus transforming it into one of the largest and richest wetland ecosystems in the world.
Geologically, the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan is the only portion in the African continent of what was left of the ancient inland lake called Lake Makgadikgadi. For over 10,000 years, the lake has been drying up due to volcanic activity limiting the flow of Boteti River to nourish the lake thus leaving it dry with large caked saltpans. Today, the national park not only contains a single salt pan but also integrates the Ntwetwe Pan, Baines', Green and Chapman's Baobabs and the Kudiakam Pan replete with the sandy deserts rising in between.
Despite its scorching temperature, Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Park is a great place to visit. Here visitors may even be able to spot uninhabited villages on the rims of the pans as well as in between them which remind us of the grim reality that the area had once been settled by prehistoric civilization.
Game viewing is also a great diversion since the park is the home of different wildlife species including migratory zebra, wildebeest, resident impala, herds of bull elephants, springbok, kudu, hartebeest, steenbok and a wide variety of predators such as lions, brown hyenas, cheetahs and leopards. In addition the flooded Makgadikgadi salt pans form a sanctuary for hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos.
Other points of interest include the dust-bowl towns of Nata and Gweta, the igneous rock islands of Kukoime and Kubu, nestled in the Sowa salt pan noted for its eerie baobab trees and the moon shaped island of Gabatsaldi. Here visitors can have an overnight camping and quad bikes or 4x4 drives in the plains which are best in the early morning.
