The Glossary
Young Gaborone of Botswana is just a newly emerged capital from the African bush, famous for its diamond and its offbeat pastoral charm. Often described as Africa's fastest growing metropolis, Gaborone is a lively and rich city nestled in between the Oodi Hills and Kgale.
Named after the ancient Kgosi chief who led the Batlokwa tribe in the 1880's, the city served as colonial fort in a village called Tlokweng. Today Gaborone is Botswana's seat of government as well as its administrative and commercial hub, naturally the envy of other African nations.
Due to its auspicious location and its proximity to a number of roads and railway lines, Gaborone also provides a convenient access to the main tourist attractions in the country such as the Chobe National Park, Kasane, the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari Desert and the saltpans of Makgadikgadi.
Holiday-makers and even hard-pressed travelers passing through the capital can find much to see and do in Gaborone starting from wandering through its famous attractions like the Gaborone Game Reserve, a home to gemsbok, eland, kudu and impala, to the Mokolodi Nature Reserve situated south of the city. Not to be ignored is St. Clair Lion Park hemmed at the banks of Notwne River. Apart from the guided walks, there is a small zoo intended for children, which is convenient for watching all sorts of wildlife.
For fun filled water sports activities, the Gaborone Dam is the place to be. Bordered by tall hills and woodlands, it offers the visitors an array of things to do starting from fishing, sailing and even windsurfing. For a chance to capture the stunning scenery of the city, visitors can head to the "Sleeping Giants" or the Kgale Hill for a trek but be wary of the baboons roaming around.
Furthermore, visitors interested in anthropological study can head to the Kolobeng Ruins which is set near the mouth of Kolobeng River on the Kanye road. The ruins of the supposedly first Christian church can be seen discovered here with the remains of the illustrious missionary David Livingstone.
Day trippers coming from the center can head to the Orapa House (The Diamond Houses) to have a close up look at the precious gems or they can arrange a quick trip to the craft villages of Mochudi and Odi where the local artisans live and work miracles with their hands.
