The diminutive but still alluring Travnik is a town situated in the central region of the war-torn country Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a characteristically picturesque city, with an extraordinary appeal that has been the product of the eventful years of its past. A former stronghold of the Bogomili, a medieval Catholic sect during the 15th century, the city flourished until 1686 when the Turkish downfall of Flungary led to Hungarian occupation which lasted until 1850.
Travnik is also acclaimed worldwide as the birthplace of Ivo Andric, the 1961 Nobel Prize winner for literature- a novelist who battled against oppression by chronicling life in his country under the Turkish Ottoman regime. Tourists are encouraged to visit the Nobel Laureate's shrine located in Belgrade. The city is located near the edge of the looming Vlasic Mountains - which is a major factor in its burgeoning tourism industry. It boasts of a stunning view of snow-capped peaks as well as high plateaus and is noted for hiking thrills and other mountain sports.
The majestic Lasva River, with its clean waters and golden sand, also warrants a visit. Travnik is proud of numerous springs and wells - and is famous for its clear-blue mineral waters. In addition, the city is known the world over for its delectable Travnik sheep milk cheese, which is a very popular export item for Bosnia-Herzegovina. Tourists can also find magnificent mosques, wooden huts, museums and other Antique architectural wonders that bear witness to the city's rich culture and history.
