Sarajevo, one of Europe's most historic cities, which was once known the world over as a war-ravaged city, has undergone a massive transformation and it is now a symbol of hope and renewal. The capital of the former Yugoslavian territories Bosnia and Herzegovina, it survived the longest siege in modern military history during the infamous Bosnian War of 1992. Somehow, the city did recover from the destruction of important infrastructure and has now emerged as a very popular destination for tourists from all around the world.
In its long history, Sarajevo has served as an important gateway for different cultures in the world. Because of this, its culture has been indelibly marked and influenced, a veritable melting pot of intermingling and reconciling customs and beliefs concentrated on a small tract of land - leading some to dub it as "Europe's Jerusalem." It is also the reason why every year tens of thousands of tourists are enticed to visit the city. Must-visit places are the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina - a receptacle for the cultural and historic heritage of the country, Bascarsija - Sarajevo's main street and its most important landmark, and the city's pride Gazi Husrev-Bey Library - widely believed as one of Europe's oldest libraries containing more than 50,000 books and historical documents.
The famed War Museum Tunnel is also a regular tourist draw. This not-to-be-missed site was originally made during the Bosnian War as a means of transporting supplies and communication into the city. Sarajevo is also a haven for tourists looking for a great culinary adventure. Though the streets are lined full with restaurants catering to a wide variety of tastes, tourists are advised to try the burek pie - phyllo dough filled with meat and salty cheeses, zelnajica - a cheese and spinach pie, and krompirusa - a dish of spicy potato served with a classic yogurt sauce.
