Central Bhutan Travel Guide
Getting to this side of Bhutan is the chance to explore the sprawling Trongsa Dzong which exhibits the grandeur of Bhutanese architecture, the sacred Bumthang Valley in Zhemgang and the Royal Manas National Park in Sarpang. Flora and fauna flourish in this region, indicative of Bhutanese peaceful co-existence with nature.
Central Bhutan is prominent with the Sal forests in Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary in Sarpang which is a home of the chital deer. Also noteworthy is the broad-leaf forest of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, cradling 395 species of birds including the endangered wards trogon, white-bellied heron and the Rufous-necked hornbill. The vast tracts of primary forests and the high peaks in the north can provide a worthwhile venue for backpackers to explore Bhutan's interior, tucked in the Eastern Himalayas where the musk deer, the Himalayan black bear and the Bengal tiger thrive and roam free.
Like in Bumthang Dzongkhag, ancient temples glitter like gold in the area, including the Jampey Lhakhang, Tamshing Lhakhang and the Kurjey Lhakhang. They are visited annually by retreaters and pilgrim abbots practicing Ningmapa and the Drukpa Kagyupa which rooted in the beliefs and core principles of Mahayana Buddhism.
Around the town, visitors can ogle at the hundred-year old palace of Ogyen Chholing which now serves as a museum and a retreat house for tourists and pilgrims. It's best to visit Central Bhutan during the UraFfestival to get a glimpse of the life of the natives around the Shingkar village which accounts for the most genuine experience of traditional Bhutan.
