The magnificent town of Njasvizh is a place submerged in a sea of history, flaunting its wonderful heritage at every turn. It proudly boasts of the picturesque Njasvizh Palace, often regarded as the most stunning sight in the whole of Belarus. Considered as one of the oldest surviving settlements in the country and its most popular, it is conveniently located just a short ride from the capital Minsk, and takes great pride in being the seat of power for the influential Radzivill family who once ruled over the region. It is certainly a perfect destination for the history enthusiasts and for the travelers who merely want to experience the land's rich past.
Though it has presumably been inhabited for a significant period of time, the town was first documented only in the year 1223 when it became a part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its claim to fame came when it was chosen as the official residence of the noble Radzivill family, who rose to power in 1553 and had remained there until their fall in 1813. They left behind an incredible legacy, especially the magnificent Njasvizh Palace which features a vast complex encompassing beautiful parks, basilicas, monasteries and an expansive landscape garden recognized as one of the largest in Europe. On account of its astonishing cultural and historical importance, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. The site is presently undergoing a major restoration project which is sure to elevate it to its former heights.
The complex is also famous for the Corpus Christi Church, which is generally regarded as the first ever Baroque-inspired architecture in Eastern Europe. One can see the imposing Slutsk Gate that stands six meters high with a girth of 17 meters, which in the past served as the sole entrance to the town. A gist of Njasvizh's history can be grasped by visiting the quaint Local History Museum, which showcases various artifacts and photo galleries accumulated over the years.
