Belarus’ national currency is the Belarusian roubles (BYB/BYR), sometimes called “zaichiki” (meaning rabbits) since the first rouble note in 1992 had a leaping rabbit. Today, roubles come in large denominations of 10s, 20s, 50s, 100s, 500s, 1000s, 5000s, 10000s, 20000s, and 50000s. There are no coins in their currency and the 10, 20, 50, and 100 banknotes are practically worthless. There are many ATMs for credit or debit cards and exchange kiosks in the big cities. Converting roubles back to hard currency becomes difficult when you’re outside of the country. Be sure to exchange all your roubles before leaving the country.
