Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park Travel Guide
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the picturesque Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park in southwestern Belarus is a lush expanse of ancient woodland that has strangely remained unspoiled by the outside world. Spanning a staggering area of 87,000 hectares, it is what remains of the great primeval forests that once ruled the landscape of Europe. A veritable biosphere reserve, it provides sanctuary for an incredibly diverse flora and fauna reputedly embracing more than a thousand species. The place is a perfect destination for the naturalists who want to experience its pristine environment, hikers and backpackers looking for adventure, and families looking to spend quality time together.
The park is home to the engendered species called the wisent, an elusive and unique type of bison that has sadly all but disappeared in the continent. An extremely large animal, it stands more than six feet tall and 10 feet long, surviving extinction only because of the small number preserved in zoos - the last truly wild wisent had been killed way back in 1927. The only reason why they can still be seen roaming the park is its reintroduction into the wild after having been bred to a sufficient population in captivity. The forest is also home to trees that have reached unbelievable ages of 200 to 350 years. It is known for its enormous oaks that have been given distinct names, like The Great Mamamuszi, The King of Nieznawowo, Emperor of the South and so on. There are also various kinds of wildlife to be discovered - boars, deer, martens, polecats, lynxes, beavers and wolves constitute only the tip of the iceberg. Tourists who get tired of the sights can head to the 10 artificial lakes where they can take a swim or go fishing. A source of national pride, the park is well-assimilated into national literature, figuring prominently in poems and songs.
