Enjoying Bangladesh's capital of Dhaka requires an acquired taste. Whether or not one enjoys its overwhelming chaos, the city is still a memorable experience. Before visiting, one should prepare for the area's incredible population density and never ending-traffic. Dhaka is all about large numbers, placing 9th in the world's largest agglomerations and over 600,000 rickshaws traveling about the city.
City of Mosques
Majority of Bangladesh's mosques are concentrated in Dhaka, hence its reputation as the “City of Mosques.” There are over hundreds of mosques to choose from, but the most prominent are the Seven Domed Mosque, the Huseni Dalan Mosque, and the Baitul Mukarram-National Mosque. The Tara Masjid Mosque stands out with its blue star motif decorations.
Cultural Center
Dhaka is the place to go to fully experience country's nationwide festivals. Streets are decorated with people while students organize events to celebrate Independence Day, Victory Day, and Language Martyr's Day. As expected, city wide celebrations abound during the Muslim festivals of Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha.
Although its people move forward with modern culture, they still retain an appreciation for traditional folk music. For more local flaire, the “Natak Para” or Theater Neighborhood is home to the nation's lively theater groups.
Shopping Frenzy
Dhaka's streets are also crowded by street stalls that sell a wide variety of products. Bangladesh is known for making the finest muslin fabric in the whole world. The city's largest bargain area is the New Market, with products ranging from jewelry, leather, to DVDs. The cheapest deals are in the Banga or Bango Bazar, where jeans cost about US$3 and jackets at US$ 5. High end visitors after a more commercial ambience can visit the city's increasing shopping malls and restaurants, enjoyed by the nation's rich and middle-class.
