Zaqatala Travel Guide
Renowned as the "Hazelnut Capital" of Azerbaijan, the city of Zaqatala is a beautiful piece of paradise squeezed in the slopes of the famous Caucasus Mountains. Featuring a spectacular landscape of lush green forests framed by majestic peaks, it is a destination that definitely impresses the senses. Its rugged terrain offers a wonderful haven for hiking and camping adventures, while naturalists have ample reason to admire its vastly unspoiled nature. Boasting of a small-town atmosphere, its friendly people and liberal customs make for a homely, relaxing stay.
Founded in the 17th century by the local people, it was transformed into a strategic fortress by the Russian military during the Caucasian Wars. Although the fortress is now in ruins, it is the city's most recognizable landmark and features various Soviet-style infrastructures. It also has a town square built in the 19th century, which is home to two amazing plane trees that are reputedly more than 700 years of age. The town offers lots of parks and monuments, like the Heydar Eliyev Park, the Dada Gorgud Square, and the Zaqatala Regional Museum and many others. One can also go and see its extensive hazelnut plantations, from whence it got its unique name. Visitors do not miss the great chance to crack lots of nuts while there.
