Shaki Travel Guide
A jewel tucked inside the lush forests of the Greater Caucasus mountain range in Azerbaijan, the ancient city of Shaki truly embodies the very definition of an off-the-beaten-path destination. Featuring a majestic landscape of beautiful flora and fauna framed by towering snow-capped peaks, it offers a rich cultural and historical heritage. The dearth of tourists seems to add to its charm and mystery - giving it an aura of the exotic. A small-town city at heart, it is a perfect get-away attraction for those seeking a welcome respite from the pressing requirements of modern life.
Believed to have been founded almost 2,700 years ago, it has experienced the predictable ups and downs associated with repeated occupation by stronger nations and empires. Its long and tumultuous history has contributed to the creation of the numerous archaeological and historical sites that can be found there today. It had been a major part of the Silk Road during ancient times and one of its most famous destinations had been the beautiful Caravansarai which was used as a "hotel" for the traders of the day. Actually, it is still used as a bona fide hotel for the modern travelers. The place also boasts of the great Silk Factory that has continuously churned out silk products for over four centuries. One of the highlights of any visit is the incredible Khansarai which had served as an exquisite summer palace for the royal Sheki Khans.
The landscape also features a plethora of parks and museums that showcases the relics of the city's heydays. With its relatively unspoiled nature, it functions as a recommended destination for hiking and camping adventures. Of course, the overall tourist experience will not be complete without the traditional delicacy Sheki Halva - a regional baklava pie made with lots of chopped nuts deliciously hidden between layers of fried dough. It's certainly something to go nuts over for.
