Qobustan Travel Guide
A veritable journey back to Stone Age era is probably the only logical way to describe Qobustan, an ancient town regally overlooking the shores of the great Caspian Sea. Once the abode of the pioneering primitive humans, it is a paradise made for the archaeological and historical enthusiasts - featuring an immense collection of ancient artifacts and relics. Incredible cave petroglyphs (paintings) depicting the early civilizations' lifestyles and stories are found scattered throughout the area. That is the main reason that has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visiting the place is truly a unique experience, since an eerie atmosphere seems to enthrall one at almost every turn.
Qobustan presents the perfect foundation for a civilization owing to its proximity to the lush shores of the Caspian. Consequently, the area is widely believed to have been settled since the eighth millennium BC. Because of its incredibly long history, it literally abounds with relics and souvenirs from the past with its more than 6,000 cave art specimens and a plethora of caveman tools and weaponry. The scenery will not disappoint, either, and tourists who are not interested in "old things" can find a haven in its amazingly green and refreshing landscape. Its volcanoes that look like piles of bubbling gray sludge are notable. It is mind-boggling to think that the Earth has only 700 of those in existence, 300 of which are squeezed into this tiny patch of land. There can also be seen the famous Gaval-Dashy, a resonant stone which was played on by the ancient people during their dance rituals.
