Nagorno Karabakh Travel Guide
A small region aspiring to the status of an individual country through its own internationally unrecognized government, Nagorno-Karabakh is a unique place nestled in the great Caucasus Mountains of Azerbaijan. Though ravaged by horrible territorial wars during the 1990s, with many of its structures destroyed, it has somehow rebuilt itself over the years and is now a veritable tourist destination. However, it is pretty much underdeveloped, hobbled by corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy. Its infrastructure is also miserable, as demonstrated by the awful roads. But these negative factors hardly deter people from visiting.
Literally translated, its name actually means "mountainous Karabakh," which is apt for the country. Established by the Kura-Araxex people during primeval times, it has suffered through numerous wars and occupation by various invaders. Added to that is its peculiar location on the map, as it threads the line between country borders. This is very apparent in the still unsettled dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia over possession of the land, which unfortunately resulted in a costly war that claimed more than 15,000 lives. A cease-fire was implemented in 1994, and it is now reasonably safe for travelers to visit the country.
The rugged and beautiful terrain of the region makes it a suitable destination for hiking and camping enthusiasts. It is also perfect for naturalists who want to admire its incredibly unspoiled nature, famous for its flora and fauna. Non-adventurers can just go and visit some of its historical sites, such as the elaborate Gandsazar Monastery, an edifice inspired by Armenian architecture; the Askeran Fortress, an 18th century strategic stronghold stretching over 1.5 kilometers; and the Agdam, the foreboding ruins of a city annihilated during the war. The region is also famous for its extensive mulberry plantations, whose fruits are harvested to produce the traditional drink, Tutti Oghi. Known as mulberry vodka in English, it is a strong alcoholic beverage.
