History has unfolded many times in Vienna, Austria's capital and largest city, where Beethoven and Mozart rose to superstardom, where Hitler studied and started to conquer Europe, and where Kaffeehaus (coffee shop) culture first started before spreading across the globe.
As the seat of many kingdoms including the Holy Roman Empire, Vienna is able to amass some of the world's finest examples of classical museums, palaces, opera houses, and art. But even though it is one of the world's richest cities with one of the highest standard of living, Vienna has a young population engaged in street performance, electronic music scene, and vibrant club culture.
Imperial grace
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vienna's historic center features the “Versailles” of Austria: Schloss Schönbrunn, the summer palace of the Habsburg monarchs. It includes the pavilion where Mozart played before kings and queens, the conference room where John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khruschchev met during the Cold War, as well as gardens, 18th-century rooms of emperors and empresses, a labyrinth, and a zoo that is considered as the oldest in the world. Nearby is the Hofburg Palace, a medieval castle with many museums, including Vienna Furniture Museum, which has the world's biggest collection of imperial furniture.
Priceless collections
More museums are nestled in MuseumsQuartier, home to the “Louvre” of Austria: Kunsthistorisches Museum or Museum of Fine Arts, which contains works by ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, alongside those by Raphael, Caravaggio, Titian, and Bosch. Sachatzkammer or the Imperial Treasury also has the Habsburgs' collection of crowns, jewels, and other gems, while Neue Hofburg or the New Palace contains thousands of royal arms and weaponry, the second largest collection of its kind on Earth. Opposite these historical galleries is Mumok, Vienna's repository of modern art.
As the classical music capital of the world, Vienna is home to theaters that are regarded as some of the best in the German-speaking world. Among these are Burgtheater and Volksoper, which play not only works by Strauss and Mozart, but also operetta and modern experimental plays like cabaret.
