British lieutenant Phillip Parker King might have mistakenly named Alligator Rivers after what are supposed to be crocodiles in the area, but these creatures, the most ancient reptiles on the planet, are not the region's only cherry. The combined rivers of East, West and South Alligator are fortified with 1,500 aboriginal art communes, rich uranium deposits, and a sliver of the Kakadu National Park, one of the world's noted heritage sites for both natural and human legacy.
Apart from representing a quarter of Australia's 184 fish variants, the Alligator Rivers is known for its waterfowl such as herons, magpie geese, ibises and spoonbills. More than 1,500 plant and animal species have been recorded in the region including mangroves, monsoon forests and water pythons. The place has become a favorite hunting ground for natural science people as new vertebrates and invertebrates are being discovered there every now and then.
For 50,000 years, aborigines have lived harmoniously in Alligator Rivers, filling its caves with paintings and carvings about their prehistoric lifestyles, gods, and about their confrontation with the British. The artsy Gagudju people lend a hand in caring for the Kakudu, while the Jawoyn natives provide the much needed labor to a uranium mine. The Gunwinggu tribe receives royalty from a uranium quarry to preserve their art and their traditions such as belief in the god Ngalyod or Rainbow Serpent.
Set in West Alligator River, the Jim Jim Falls boasts of white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water. Bushwalking is also trendy, especially along Merl in Northern Kakadu. Camping or hiring a houseboat is the only available means for accommodation. Restaurants are present in neighboring tourist spots such as Alice Springs, Kakadu and Darwin. The Alligator Rivers is part of the Northern Territory, which is a by-word for its legendary outback pubs. Alligator Rivers can be reached only through chartered all-terrain vehicles or airplanes.
