Nestled in the Eastern Pyrenees, the picturesque parish cities of Canillo & Soldeu have made their reputations as some of the most popular tourist attractions in the entire Principality of Andorra. A short distance away from the country's capital, Andorra La Vella, they are home to numerous scenic sites that are captivating and filled with fantastic aesthetic and historical values. They have also made a name for themselves as world-respected skiing sanctuary for enthusiasts and novices alike.
Canillo, a town within a parish, is considered as one of the biggest of its kind – with the land covering an area of 121 square kilometers. It boasts of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Metrixell, also known as the patron saint of Andorra, a statue that depicts the Blessed Mother carrying and clutching the Infant Jesus close to her heart – and in whose name the people of the town of Metrixell built the chapel sanctuary. Canillo is also home to the famed Ice Palace of Andorra, an Olympic-size skating rink covering an area of 8,000 sq. meters. Tourists can experience the culture of the locals by visiting the nearby tribal settlements and villages in order to watch their lifestyles and shop for beautiful handicrafts for sale at the village markets.
Soldeu, on the other hand, is an idyllic and scenic town located in close proximity to Canillo. Linked together by the 193-kilometer Andorra Ski Resort of Grandvalira, they are known as one of the premier resorts of the country and the largest in the Pyrenees region. Spanning the Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig and Soldeu-El Tarter ski areas, this vast resort is reputed to be able to accommodate up to 99,000 skiers at any given hour. Tourists visiting the place may indulge themselves in the various activities possible – such as dog-sledding, reindeer rides, and of course, skiing.
