Skiing haven Andorra La Vella is both the capital and solitary city in the Principality of Andorra. Surrounded by its majestic snow-capped mountains – the best in the Pyrenees, it teems with skiing resorts that draw tourists and ski enthusiasts from the world over. The tax-free capital is also a destination for shopping aficionados, as it is a hub for duty-free shopping centers selling goods at incredibly low prices.
The name Andorra La Vella literally means “Andorra the Old”, and it is extremely apt, as it has served as the country's principal city since 1278 – when Andorra was first governed as a co-principality of France and Spain. The city's history is indelibly marked by Roman Catholicism, with about 90 percent of the populace following the religion. As a result, there are numerous remnants of Catholic edifices to be found all around the area, most notably the Church of St. Stephen and the Statue of the Bishop.
In visiting the city, tourists are advised to include in their itineraries the imposing Casa de la Vall (House of the Valley), which serves as Andorra's national landmark. It is a historical piece of architecture that has functioned as the state's parliamentary since 1707. Erected during the 16th century, it is the most important sight in the land. Also warranting a visit is the Church of Santa Coloma, a pre-Romanesque style infrastructure and is widely considered as the oldest building in the city.
Probably the most remarkable of Andorra La Vella's attractions is the Calda Health Spa, famously known as Europe's largest warm water treatment center. It encompasses a massive area of 269,100 square feet, making it a tourist delight – featuring numerous facilities such as Jacuzzis, Roman baths, grapefruit pools, bubble beds and massage centers.
