In Salah might literally mean "good well," yet it is infamous in Algeria for its salty water. This town, however, is generously blessed with rich oil reserves that supply much of Europe and Asia.
Among the town's other features are its red to violet brick ksars (walled villages) and its creeping sand dunes, which cut the town into half starting from the western boundary of Aoulef road to the center of the town.
Visitors who came by for a quick visit can have a panoramic view of In Salah during sunset. At the western edge of the town is where tourists can find the palmeraie, which houses some 250,000 different species of trees.
Aside from manning the town's oil and gas reserves, many of the locals busy themselves in date growing. There are also other fruits and vegetables being nurtured by the farmers through the aid of the artesian wells that also sustain the needs of the nomadic Tuareg tribe.
Because of its strategic location, In Salah can serve as a jump-off point to the oasis city of Tamanrasset or to the town of El Golea, where the grave of Catholic martyr Charles de Foucauld is located.
