The Glossary
A seaport town by the pristine Marsa ben M'hid beach, Ghazaouet is situated in the Mediterranean coast of Algeria and was named by the Romans as Ad Fratres or "Two Brothers" due to the twin rocks that jut out from the water on its sea front. This tiny town that belongs to the Tlemcen Province does not have anything in particular to show off. Nevertheless, it displays the charm of both its French and Moorish influences, as reflected in its culture and architecture.
Much of Ghazaouet echoes all things French, starting from its harbor at the town's center, which is home to a church transformed into a public library. There is also a covered market built in 1938. The market is noted for its French vibe.
A chockfull of trucks and cars create a loud buzz in Ghazaouet's streets. These vehicles are owned by smugglers who try to carry Algeria's inexpensive petrol oil to the nearby Morocco, which is just next door to Ghazaouet.
Fans of long walks might enjoy traversing the Pecharie, which represents the rural picture of the town. Here, visitors can have the chance to see tons of fishes being carried off the boat and plenty of local fishermen casting their nets and rods to the Mediterranean Sea.
