El-Atteuf is one of the cities that constitute the Pentapolis of the UNESCO World Heritage Site M'zab Valley, which is spread across the Sahara Desert. Regarded as one of Algeria's ancient towns, El-Atteuf is hailed as a work of art in terms of urban planning.
This Islamic center was first inhibited by the Berber-speaking Mozabites, followed by the Iznaten and then by the royal clan of Rostemid. Today, visitors of different races and colors flock to the city to see El-Atteuf's famous structures that lie in the oasis amid the arid desert landscape of Sahara.
Much of El-Atteuf's architecture is influenced by the Ibadi's art of purism, which focuses on the importance of space and land. The architecture is one of the so-called ksar or walled villages in Algeria that are unique from other forms of Islamic architectures in the country.
The highlight of a visit to El-Atteuf is the 700-year-old Mosque of Sidi Brahim, the focal point of houses arranged into circles. The houses' circular layout aims to promote collective living and social equality among residents living around the mosque.
The mosque's whitewashed exterior is covered with limestone and coated with lime mortar, making it contrast with the earthly color of the surrounding desert.
