Djemila is not even close to Europe, yet it houses one of the most striking European architectures in Algeria—the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Roman ruins of Djemila.
Literally meaning the "beautiful one" in Arabic, Djemila is nestled in Basse Kabylie valley and is surrounded by snow-capped hillock and wheat fields that turn gold by the glimmer of the sun. Djemila, formerly known as Cuicul, used to be among the Roman towns straddling along Tunisia and Algeria.
The city may be destroyed by several catastrophes in the past, yet Djemila's Roman ruin complexes remain standing firmly on the ground. Today, the structure is now accompanied by a few buildings like the Temple of Septimius Severus, Capitoline Temple of Jupiter, a few basilicas, triumphal arches, bath houses, and a 3,500-seat theater.
There is also a museum that brims with fine examples of art mosaics that include the House of Bacchus, Venus and Her Toilette, and The Abduction of Europe by Jupiter, which all cover the entire wall of the museum. Apart from the impressive artworks on the wall, there are also royal burial chambers outside the museum. One of these chambers contains the catacomb of Septimus Severus and his wife Julia Domna.
After exploring the ruined city of Djemila, visitors can jump off to the next stop, which could either be Setif, Constantine or Algiers.
