The Glossary
Distinguished as the site where Albanian independence was formally declared in 1912, the port city of Vlora overlooking the great Adriatic Sea is a burgeoning tourist destination. It boasts of a picturesque coastline, wonderful beaches and incredibly clear, pristine waters—perfect for swimming, diving, boating and fishing. Framed by a background of scenic snow-capped mountains, it is city that never ceases to amaze. For this reason, Vlora is touted by locals as the best foundation for the country's tourism industry.
One of the oldest cities in the country, it was established by the Greeks in the 6th century BC as a port city. It was overrun, however, by Roman colonists because of its favorable geographic position. During the 5thth century, they transformed it into an Episcopal See that functioned as the seat of power for many of the region's renowned bishops. Apart from the Romans, it was also occupied by the Ottoman Empire in 1417, raising on it a pentagon-shaped fortress with massive walls to defend against enemy artillery. Inside it were many Muslim houses and mosques - most notably the Mosque of Muradia designed by the Albanian architect Sinan. Thus, the city takes pride in being home to many religious archaeological remains and churches that attest to its rich heritage.
Above anything else, however, Vlora makes its fame as a beach town. It is almost impossible to visit it without sampling its wares, or having an urge to take in the stunning view of the seashore -considered one of the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean region. A charming practice in the area is to gather water from the natural spring by the beach to drink and more often to serve as souvenirs to take home and show to friends and family.
