Southern Albania Travel Guide
Boasting of the most eye-catching scenery in all of Albania, the Southern Albania region located by the banks of the great Ionian Sea hogs the most of the country's fascinating and beautiful destinations. Sporadically inhabited, it has been largely preserved, and now features an incredibly pristine coastline regarded as one of the best in Europe and the country's biggest tourist draw.
Not only for stunning nature, Southern Albania also takes a lot of pride in its rich cultural and historical heritage - it is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that contain many ancient archaeological sites and architecture. Foremost of these is the famously old city of Butrint, which reputedly has been inhabited as a settlement for over 2,500 years. Roman relics and infrastructure remains serve as living historical lessons. Another equally historical town is Gjirokaster, where some of the most famous figures in Albania had been born and raised. It features a beautiful Ottoman architecture that is definitely a sight to see.
Southern Albania, however, is most renowned for the majestic Ionian Coast that is a fantastic venue for swimming, diving, boating and fishing with its picturesque shores and crystal-clear waters. On its banks lies the popular resort town of Saranda, a bustling tourist attraction that has been called the Albanian Riviera - touted as the up and coming destination of the Mediterranean. The unique Blue Eye Water Spring, a 45-meter deep wonder in the middle of a lush forest, looks like a big blue eye when seen from afar.
