The Glossary
Known as the "town of the honeymooners," the beautiful resort town of Saranda in southern Albania is a land of wonderful coastlines and pristine waters that attracts honeymooning couples from all around. Found at the banks of the great Ionian Sea, it is considered a major part of the country's burgeoning tourist zone - the Albanian Riviera. With its small-town ambiance and serene atmosphere, it offers visitors an experience which will remain in their memory for long. Tourists flock to it as a welcome respite from the countless demands of city life.
Called Onchesmos by the Greek during ancient times, it served as an important industrial port and as the gateway to the country. When it was overrun by the Byzantine Empire, it was renamed Agioi Saranta (forty saints), which eventually gave rise to its current designation. Its well-appointed geographic location has blessed it with great coasts, white sand shores and the extremely favorable Mediterranean climate. Thus, it has been a preferred tourist destination for long and has become the principal source of income to the people. For a significant number of the local populace it is the only source of livelihood.
The town's horseshoe-shaped bay is a paradise for swimmers, divers, boaters and even fishing enthusiasts. Opposite its unspoiled beaches lie a scenic view of a lush green forest with its interesting flora and fauna and a wide variety of wild life. It is also located in close proximity to the ancient, UNESCO World Heritage city of Butrint, a 2,500 year-old settlement featuring numerous archaeological and architectural remains attracting history buffs and researchers. Truly, this is a place worth visiting, if only for the wonders of nature.
