Literally meaning the "Mouth of the River of Death," the city of Cotonou started as a humble fishing hamlet and a crossroad of trade and commerce under the Kingdom of Dahomey. Today, this thriving city is slowly mutating and becoming the lure of Benin as it is the region's largest seaport. The city also takes pride of its rough motorcycle taxis known as zemi-johns, which are a good way to experience the local village life.
Among the things to do in Cotonou include a tour to see the Cotonou Central Mosque, the candy-striped Cotonou Cathedral or Notre Dame des Apotresand, and the Ancient Pont Bridge, where pirogue boats can be seen crossing from below. One can also shop for African textiles and curios at the long and winding alley of Grand Marché du Dantokpa.
Cotonou also take prides of its unspoiled coastlines like Fidjrosse, a beach speckled with nondescript inns and cafés that could be perfect spots to kill time while watching the setting of the sun.
Strolling around Porto Novo could be another option as this is where one can pay a visit to a royal palace and a number of museums such as the historical Ouidah port, which used to be a detention center for the slaves.
