To the west of the old city walls along Suthep road is the Suandok Temple. This was built in the 14th century by the King of Lanna in honor of a priest who was visiting the area at that time. The temple is filled with images of Buddha as well as other Buddhist relics. The architecture of the temple is appealing and magnificent. The ordination hall of the Suandok Temple is also unique since the sides are open opposed to the usual closed design. But with all the unique designs and magnificent art, the most intriguing feature of the temple is its Buddha relic that is said to be Buddha himself.
Legend has it that before the said image was placed in the chedi of the Suandok Temple, the image replicated itself. The second image was then placed on an elephant and a second temple was built for the other Buddha image on the exact spot where the elephant died.
