The 2-28 Peace Park found at Taipei's Old Town Center was first built in 1908 and it was then known as the Taihoku Park. The name was changed after the Japanese occupation of the country to the Taipei New Park in 1945.

Its current name, the 2-28 Peace Park was adopted in February 28, 1997. This was to commemorate the incident that happened on the same date in 1947 when 10,000 to 30,000 civilians were killed when soldiers loyal to Chiang Kai-Shek opened fire on protesters rallying in the area.

Today, tourists will find a memorial to the people who died on that day at the center of the park. There is also a museum dedicated to the incident at the north entrance of the 2-28 Peace Park.
