The National Palace Museum in Taipei was originally the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City in Beijing. After the Mukden Incident, Chiang Kai-shek ordered the pieces of art from the museum to be moved in order to protect them from the Japanese forces. By the 1940s, most of the pieces ended up in Nanjing. The final years of the Chinese Civil War saw most of the pieces of art and history move to Taiwan and the National Palace Museum was established by 1965 while the People's Republic of China established the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City which is a different institution.
The museum holds more than 650,000 pieces of ancient Chinese art and artifacts, which is considered to be the largest collection in the world.
