On the upper terrace of Mihintale Hill is the Ambasthala Dagoba which means Mango Tree Temple in English. It is a small structure with a nice story behind it.
According to legend, the temple was built on the spot where King Devanampiyatissa, while in the middle of hunting, was surprised by Mahinda. The latter then quizzed the king about mango trees in order to test his intelligence. The actual temple stands where Mahinda stood while a few distance away, a statue of King Devanampiyatissa marks where the king stood.
Visitors will have to buy a ticket at the entrance in order to visit the Ambasthala Dagoba. Also remember to take off your shoes and hats before entering the temple.
