First built by the Portuguese, the Galle Fort was renovated by the Dutch in the 17th century. The fort has had several renovations and repairs after that. The care that it was given is evident since it still looks polished even today.
The Galle Fort has been through a lot of adversity, one of them is the Boxing Day tsunami. Although most of the town was destroyed, the fort remained intact.
Today, this is the main tourist attraction of Galle. Travelers will find most of the attractions that the town has to offer. This is also why the people who own properties inside the fort as well as the local government are pushing this to become a tax free zone so it can further be developed into a modern wonder.
