Found at the heart of Colombo, the Vajiraramaya Temple was established in 1901 by the Most Venerable Pelene Sri Vajiraramaya Maha Nayaka Thera, the erudite monk from South Sri Lanka. On September 6, 2009, the temple was declared as a sacred site by the government.
The Vajiraramaya Temple is not only a center of learning Buddhism for the local youth, it is open to foreign students of Buddhism as well. In fact, there are already several students from foreign countries currently embracing Buddhism in the temple.
Because of the great job the temple does and the number of prominent personalities it has developed, the temple is arguably the best known temple of Sri Lanka in the world.
